RT2011, Days 12 + 13: Texas Style.

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

this is not the ONLY cool Tikkr watch curtain photo I got. really.

I had the pleasure of stumbling across the Texas Style Council website before our road trip adventure.  I thought it seemed like a perfect opportunity to network with really cool bloggers and rad Texas folk…so I hopped onboard!

that's right, I got so excited about the event and everything I was learning, that I barely took any photos! cool dinosaurs suffice, right??

Also, we had the pleasure of connecting with Leslie from Dress Shop–a super cute boutique in downtown Austin–and she placed a great first betsy & iya order.

Amid lots of cool events–a clothing swap, a colorful welcoming party at Bo Concept, and a hugely invigorating conference on blogging, fashion, business and how they all intersect—I had the immense pleasure of meeting some really inspiring people in the business.

told you so.

Jennine from The Coveted was the keynote speaker.   I was blown away by her humility and moved by her ideas.  I was particularly impressed by the lovely organizers, Grechen (who really liked my jewelry…eeeee!!) and Indiana –and I’ve since become a big fan of their blogs. And of course, I am a huge admirer of Susan and the whole ModCloth team.  I was so excited to meet them all.

the beautiful Indiana from Adored Austin.

Etsy and ModCloth repreSENT.

I had ideas BURSTING out after this event.  I still do.  I have a hard time keeping up with them on top of all the new accounts and the fact that I’m DYING to share my new design project with you!!  But bundle it all up and it’s like the best birthday present EVER.  to myself. and then I’m going to give it to you.  just WAIT!

Happy Wednesday to my favies!

RT2011, Day 11: Austin is Solid Gold.

Friday, March 25th, 2011

style is oozing out the edges...I mean, right!?

To me, Solid Gold and the neighborhood where it lives was the most representative of the Austin I have always heard about…  The one that everyone says is most similar to Portland. It’s owner, Katie, has such a cool and sharp eye.  Not to mention that she was such a pleasure to work with.  I LOVE MEETING THESE AMAZING SHOP OWNERS!  Have I told you guys that yet!?  I love my job.

I straight up stole this amazing image of the great Townes right off their hot facebook page. LOVE solid gold style. love.

i'm not kidding when I say, I think this model is an old friend of mine from College...WHA!?

The shop itself is so well designed, by her and her husband.  It is light, airy, and super fresh. With its own Austin flair, it felt like I was walking in to a little bit of Portland.

And that was really nice.

She picked a wide range of b&i, but she was super duper excited about this necklace:

Ashlyn's Brilliance (named after the real deal "iya")

So I’m super duper excited to make it and get it in her HOT shop!  GO visit the lovely Katie and her beautiful shop!

You GUYS!  Have an awesome weekend.  Seriously.

***Song of the Moment: You Wanted a Hit, by LCD Soundsystem***  Okay okay okay, I am truly behind the times because I just discovered this amazing music, but I have to say—I’m full-on smitten.  full on, people.

images disclaimer:  I forgot my camera when I visited Solid Gold, so all of these amazing images are courtesy of their own website and facebook page.  Thank you, yay!

RT 2011, Day 10: Austin hooks it up.

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

“Hello, Betsy and Will.  Welcome to Austin, the land of heat and sun,” said Austin.

And we said: THANK YOU!  OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!  WE’RE SO IN LOVE WITH YOUR SUN AND HEAT, AUSTIN!!!!  HALLELUJAH!!!

Our new store in Austin: Kick Pleat.

And then we texted Portland something we regret, but we made up and we’re all better now and we’re still sorry, Portland.

From Austin on (with one hilarious exception), we had sun.  We started off day one in Austin by thanking the hotel gods that we actually found a place to stay.  You see, SXSW was just starting up as we arrived in Austin.  What this basically means is that hotels that normally cost $100/night now run about $434.

The owner was potting plants when we stopped by.

The owner was potting plants when we stopped by.

It also means that EVERYONE is straight up booked solid.  Like, no room at the inn booked.  But.  We found places.  And for that, we thanked the hotel gods.

So sparse and gorgeous.

So sparse and gorgeous.

We moseyed around Austin and found Kick Pleat, a store we’d been turned on to about a year ago by Tiffanee of Mabel & Zora (thanks, T!).  Kick Pleat is beautiful: astonishingly well curated.  And coming soon, you can find betsy & iya here.  Kick Pleat chose exclusively from the Origins collection.

Find these in Kick Pleat soooooon!

Red, White, and Blue—you’ve been so true.

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

We’ve been away from reliable Internet and extra time for a few days now. I write to you now from the car and our last (long) stretch home. It’s been such a fulfilling journey. We more than met our goals, with amazing accounts now filling out the lonesome states–the country is looking fat and happy with betsy & iya. From my favorite rolling blue mountains through intimidating desert rock to awe-inspiring caverns and confusing weather extremes back to cloudy drizzle, from varying coffee qualities to celebrity dog parks, from old friends to new friends and back, and the unconditional love of true family next to the feeling of home and all that’s familial, and the intimacy of the person who loves you no matter how onion-y your armpits are or how morning-y your breath smells or how many new eye bags you’ve picked up, the person who screams with you like a dodo to your favorite songs, the one who kisses you in the car again against rolling green spring California hills, flanked by the dog who loves you for everything you do: I’d say it’s been a good trip.

We will be continuing to document out journey, starting back with Day 10. We hope you’ll join us.

Thanks for staying with us.
