RT2011, Days 18-19: LA is where the heart is (who knew?)

Friday, April 8th, 2011

A brief pre-script: Our current sale is on until we hit 2,500 fans on Facebook, a milestone we’re 16 fans away from!  Here’s the discount code, good for $20 off your next order.  But hurry!  We’ll hit 2,500 fans any day now! And now, to the post…

We had some pretty deluxe accommodations in Los Angeles, and a pretty deluxe set of plans.  Our friends were getting married.  And we would spend the weekend in the Hollywood hills.

It doesn't look like a lot of traffic, but it sure felt that way.

Perhaps it’s borderline heresy for a fashion company to post this on their blog, but we… don’t really like… LA.  But we LOVED our weekend here.

Will in the Hills. A hill Will.

Despite how much we’re totally in love with each other, our lovely dog, and our life, we’d been on the road and away from the comfort of familiar people and places for a long time at this point.  Cracking that first beer, hugging that first hug, laughing that first laugh in LA was incredibly rejuvenating.

The feast that awaited us in LA. Um... AMAZING.

We call this baby doggy.

A weekend and a tied knot later (and with a newfound fondness for the place), we bid adios to LA and began the final leg of our northward trip home.

The wedding was held at a converted smog check building. Notice how Betsy's eyes and lips match the sign perfectly???

HAPPY WEEKEND, EVERYBODY!!!

RT2011, Days 16-17: Be Mine, San Diego

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

After a brief stopover in Phoenix, we found our way to San Diego.  And boy, were we ready for a stopover.  We’d covered half the country–1,500+ miles–in 3 days, stopping only for appointments, meals, and sleep.

Even with satellite radio in our new car, the regular radio, and two iPhones, we found ourselves crazy for new tunes by the time we hit Phoenix.  We found a cute record shop there and bought the following: Sound of Silver and This is Happening, by LCD Soundsystem, No Color, by The Dodos, Halcyon Digest, by Deerhunter, and the self-titled Maximum Balloon.  High marks the first four and an enjoyable listen for the last; however, we both agreed that Maximum Balloon works better to fill slots on a mixed tape rather than all the way through all at once.

ANYWAY.

San Diego came into our lives and we were ready for her.

We’ll be sending Vocabulary Boutique her first order in the next few days.  Vocabulary really enjoyed selections from the Shameless Love line.

RT2011, Notable Meals & one knitted lamppost

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Both times we’ve been on the road, we’ve packed along a cooler to get us through breakfast and lunch.  We’ll buy coffee in the morning and a snack later on, perhaps, but it’s dinner that we look forward to.  A look in pictures at some of the exceptional places we refueled.

An old garage turned Mexican joint in Charleston

Spoon me.

Fish tacos and sweet potato fries. (PS, you're still #1, Porque No?)

Cause sometimes it's not official until it's in neon.

On the sauce.

The work of Magda Sayeg. So. Cool.

It was never this pretty after this photo. Pretty much devoured it.

Finding good coffee on the road was our biggest challenge. And this place was our biggest goldmine.

Man, I'm a sucker for old photos.

San Francisco's inimitable Tartine.

I'm not lying when I tell you we spent $40 at Tartine and ate our spoils all the way up I-5.

We remembered to take the picture mid-devour.

So are we just lucky?  Or have things changed since that dirty rumor began that it’s impossible to find good food on the road?

RT2011, Days 14-15: Caverns the size of Texas.

Friday, April 1st, 2011

It was 6pm when we left Austin.  Betsy had spent the day at the TxSCC, and I grocery shopped, did laundry, and ran the dog around in two different parks.  You see, a thirteen hour drive (not including stops) lay ahead of us.  Punkin’ McCervarich (one of the dog’s many nicknames) needed to be TIRED.  In 24 hours, we were due in Albuquerque.

Texas: the other empty.

Anyone home?

We drove 7 hours the first night and landed in Fort Stockton, TX for a cat’s nap before our next stint.

Enchantment and Shotguns.

You see, we were going to pass by Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and I wanted to visit.  Betsy wanted to sleep.  Exploring the caverns meant a late night, an early morning, and a handful of Betsy convincing.  Boy, were we ever glad we stopped.

A maxim: Will and Betsy move more than Caves.

Caverned and coffee’d up, we continued to Albuquerque.  A meeting with the uber-cute Aqui, a dinner of Asian street food, and a couple of well deserved beers later,  we fell into bed two very happy campers.

Aqui was really into these excellent layering necklaces.
